10 Tips to Mix and Match Prints and Patterns – The Chika Ibe

Hey guys!

I’m sure a few of you have experienced this feeling when scrolling through social media, you see one of your favorite fashion blogger/ influencer wearing a mix of prints and you whisper to yourself, “How does she look this good while wearing pattern on pattern?” I got you girl! Today I’ll be sharing a few tips on how you can go about mixing prints without looking all over the place.

Keep Them Within the Same Color Palette

Mixing prints is most likely hard for you, but what if I told you that you could mix prints by just keeping them in the same color palette? Like different hues of browns or mixing several warm colors. This way you outfit doesn’t look like you’re doing too much and you also look like you planned out the whole fit.

Match One Significant Color

This is similar to the first tip, because it focuses on color. With this tip though, you’re focusing on just one color and making sure each piece of clothing has a good amount of that color in it. Let’s use green as the main color, you’ll want to make sure that the green stripe shirt you have chosen goes well with the green floral pants. Like the examples below, which I may or may not have chosen while picking inpiration 😂

Invest in Stripes and Polka Dots

Stripes and Polka Dots are your friends, I honestly believe they are the most common prints in the fashion industry (apart from animal and floral prints of course), not only are they easy to style, these prints are very versatile, did I mention that they can also be worn together? I’m more of a stripe girl, so you’ll find me gravitating towards stripes, but that doesn’t mean you won’t find me with a few polka dot pieces. If you’re reading this this is your sign to get your self something with this print on them.

Substitute for Accessories

This tip is for the queens who have read the first three tips and thought to themselves, “There is no way I’ll be wearing two prints at the same time!” Have you thought of accessorizing? Let me paint a scenario, you have on a pin stripped dress and you know d*mn well you do not want to carry that boring black bag. Girl! Experiment with a bag with character, let the bag do the talking, get your self something different from the norm.

Remember Your Basics

Basic pieces like shirts, jeans, blazer, etc. aren’t forgotten in these. You can decide to dress them up doing a lot or you can just pair them with something similar and keeping the outfit subtle.

Layer Patterns With Two Different Scales

Have you ever seen a blogger style printed pieces that look the same but aren’t actually the same? What they do is pair the same print or pattern but these prints have a difference in size. You see this a lot in the case of polka dots. Because they don’t want to look like they are doing a lot, they tone it down with a smaller scale.

Experiment With Colors

If I’m being honest, this is a a note to self as well, lately I’ve become so opposed to colors and I don’t even know why, cause that used to be my jam. Anyways, if you’re bold enough (you probably are, because you’re reading this post) try some color. It doesn’t even have to be in the same color palette, try something different.

Match the Same Print in Different Colors

I don’t know if you will remember this, I hope you do especially if you’re Nigerian. There was a time when tailors used to mix the star ankara (I can’t find a reference, I really hope you know what I’m talking about), you would see a dress with about three colors of that same print, we didn’t know the tailors were up to something😂. That’s a good example of what I mean, you would most likely find this when you purchase a two piece/ co-ord.

Get outfits already mixed by the designers

The designers have already made it easy for us, they have mixed several prints and made an outfit, this way the whole thought process is cut short and all you need to do is buy the outfit.

Have Fun

Have fun while dressing up, if you feel good, you look good. If you decide you want to mix several prints, it’s up to you! Girl just do you and stay confident while wearing your outfit!
