From basic shirts to a little extra-ness, the 2022 summer trends will have you taking out your cards and heading to the nearest online store.
As we are aware everywhere is getting hotter and everyone is wearing lesser and if you’re in Nigeria like I am, you know that it’s raining season but for some reason everywhere still seems to be hot. I have gone ahead to create a guide or should I say manual of what people are wearing this summer (hot weather) and what I think you should get your hands on.
Crotchet Pieces
I don’t know if you are like me, but I spend a large amount of time on Tiktok. If you are, you have probably seen a lot of the fashion influencers/ enthusiasts in one crotchet piece or the other. A common one is the handkerchief style top, which like the name implies looks like a handkerchief. This trend has become so common in the fashion industry that you see different clothing items and even accessories like bags, headbands, slippers, etc. with this particular look.
Low-Rise Everything
The 90s are back and they have come back with the low-rise fit on every bottom. I particularly hate this trend, solely because I am a hater and my tummy won’t let me, other than that I really love how it looks on the girls that wear it. It gives me early Girlfriends vibes, with their low-rise skirts and jeans.
Longer Shorts (Dad Shorts)
This trend has been around for a long time and I don’t think it’s going anywhere soon. I am also a big fan of this trend, and I know it’ll still be a staple in my wardrobe when it isn’t trending. This short style is very good for the girls that still want to rock shorts without showing too much of their legs or the bottom-heavy girls – like myself, who want to avoid that friction between their thighs.
Platform Slippers
I have platform slippers already in my cart all that needs to be done is for me to click purchase. These slippers remind me of primary school when I had a pair. I think they were orange or pink, I can’t remember but I really liked them. They are in style again so why not get my hands on them? The most trendy ones at the moment are the white flip flops with black soles (I recently found that Primark sells this for cheap) and the Gucci platform slippers.
Bright Colors
If you know me you know I am such a basic/ neutral girl when it comes to style, but lately, I have been loving colors. One of the most shocking colors that I keep engaging in is the color pink! I know, shocking right? I have seen so many black girls on pink lately and my eyes are pleased. That being said, colors are it this summer and I want to get my hands on some soon.
Baggy Trousers
A personal fave, I am generally in love with every thing baggy/ oversized. Especially for girls like me with semi long legs, the baggy pants paired with something more body hugging is a look I hope never goes out of style. The TikTok girls have decided that the perfect way to wear these pants (especially Dickies) is to roll the waist belt down to give you the cool relaxed vibe.
Textured Fabric
The girls decided that they were ditching ironing and found themselves textured fabrics😂. I’m a huge fan of the plisse fabric – the fabric that a lot of brands use for their two piece sets , manipulated fabrics, wrinkles, and a lot more. They give an effortless “I don’t care” look and they definitely make a statement when paired right.
Sweetheart Neckline
This trend has been around for a while now but has been on a rise now that the “clean girl aesthetic” is present. It exudes feminine energy and just like the name implies, it actually does make you look like a sweetheart.
Chunky or Y2k Sunglasses
This particular trend is one I don’t think I will be trying. I personally do not think I look good in y2k sunglasses, they are just so cool that I have no idea where I would wear them to. If your style is more different or alté, I can already see you in baggy shirt and pants, a pair of sneakers and the sunglasses with an odd colored lens. For the chunky sunglasses, I have been doing a lot of deceiving to convince myself that I will look good in them after seeing Hafymo wear a pair.
Gold Jewelry
I remember growing up thinking gold jewelries were for old people and my Yoruba aunties, boy was I wrong! Now I feel I look pale when I wear silver. I’m personally a hoop girl and I keep restocking on hoops when I have the chance. A lot of brands have made cheap and accessible options for us baddies on a budget and for now that’s what I will be buying. Have in mind that these are not sustainable so you’re going to have to keep purchasing. If you’re looking for more sustainable options my next blog post will help with that. Crocs
Is it just me that thought crocs were ugly and only worn by doctors when they were at the hospital? Well crocs had a rebrand and have now made it to a lot of peoples wishlists. I’m still indifferent about pairing crocs with some outfits but I know a lot of people who don’t care for the occasion and wear their crocs regardless. I mean, you can’t fault them, comfort is key.
Midi Skirts
I want to be mini skirt girl so bad but the girls have decided that we are wearing midi skirts this summer. I see this skirts paired with crop tops, crew necks, corsets, bralettes and more. I’m still trying to find a liking to these skirts and maybe sometime in the future we can be friends but for now, I think midi skirts have some kind of beef with me.
If you read to this point, I’ll like to remind you that you do not have to join in on trends. It’s okay to have a personal style and it’s okay to wear what ever you are comfortable in.
